Tell us a little bit about yourself and what inspired you to start your business!: I've wanted to be an attorney since I was 7. After working for nearly a decade in the legal field, I knew I wanted to do things differently. Specifically, I wanted to provide my clients with a personalized experience where each client is treated like family, and speaking with an attorney is a guarantee. Most law firms make it impossible to speak with an attorney until you've paid for a consultation or their hourly rate, and during these meetings, most attorneys are not very approachable. Debra Law seeks to change this and bring the law into the 21st century by making it easy to maintain contact with me without being charged for every email or text. There is also just not enough female representation in the legal community, so my secondary goal with my law firm is to educate and inspire young women and girls to pursue their interests in the legal profession through outreach and mentorship.
Tell us about your business offerings, who your business is for, and why you're so passionate about serving this client base!: I offer comprehensive estate plans, including Wills and Trusts, as well as other related documents. There is a common misconception that estate planning is only for the ultra-wealthy, which is absolutely not true; estate planning is for everyone. Comprehensive estate plans provide protection not only for your legacy, but also for your children. A properly crafted estate plan lays out guidelines for who will care for your minor children if you become incapacitated or at your death by nominating guardians and providing for your child's care and maintenance through a Trustee of your Trust.
Estate planning is about avoiding probate, which is not only expensive, but also takes years to complete and is a hassle for your loved ones. Estate planning also allows you full control over who gets to benefit from your legacy. With probate, the state decides who gets what based on lineage, which can cause issues if you have children, grandchildren, or even parents whom you no longer speak to. The state already takes so much from us through our taxes and high cost of living. I am passionate about estate planning because I believe it is extremely important to ensure that the state doesn't take a piece of your legacy simply because you forgot to complete some documents.
An estate plan is a one-time fee for a lifetime of security. The goal with Debra Law is to make the law more accessible. As part of this mission, Debra Law offers in-home initial meetings and document signing appointments, as well as weekend document signing appointments for all Stanislaus County clients.
